Trout Fishing on West Canada Creek: A Guide for Anglers Visiting Central New York
West Canada Creek is one of the most renowned trout streams in Central New York — and if you're a fishing enthusiast, it deserves a spot on your list.
Running from the southeastern Adirondacks through Herkimer and Oneida counties before emptying into the Mohawk River near Herkimer, West Canada Creek offers approximately 26 miles of accessible frontage with easy access right along Route 28 — the same road our campground sits on.
What You'll Catch
From Hinckley Dam to Herkimer, anglers concentrate on brown trout, stocked annually as yearlings and two-year-olds by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. In the upper reaches, brook trout are the favorite. Smallmouth bass and fallfish also offer sporty catches in the lower section.
Brown trout typically range from 12 to 18 inches and the creek runs about 80 feet wide with large pools connected by pockets and riffles — ideal structure for holding fish.

The Trophy Section
The trophy section runs from Trenton Falls about 2.5 miles down to the Cincinnati Creek confluence. It's catch-and-release with artificial flies only and is open year-round. Special no-kill restrictions and extended fishing seasons help produce trophy-sized fish.
One important note: below Trenton Falls, the creek is subject to sudden water surges from the upstream power dam. Wading anglers should watch for rising waters and move to shore quickly.
Best Times to Fish
Spring is excellent for hatches, though water levels can run high. Summer stays productive because cool lake discharge from Hinckley Dam keeps water temperatures down. Fall is the best time for big brown trout — plan a trip in late September or October for your best shot at a trophy fish.
The trophy section at Trenton Falls is open year-round, so there's never truly an off-season for dedicated anglers.
Access and Parking
With approximately 26 miles of accessible stream frontage and 11 parking lots, West Canada Creek is easy to get to. Route 28 runs alongside much of the creek, with multiple pull-offs and direct river access throughout.
Know Before You Go
A few essentials before heading out:
•A valid New York State fishing license is required
•Check current DEC regulations at dec.ny.gov before your trip — rules vary by section
•Water levels can change suddenly below Trenton Falls due to dam releases — always wade with caution
•The trophy section requires artificial lures only — no bait
•Most anglers practice catch and release, but the section near Poland is catch-and-keep
Make It a Weekend
The best part? You don't have to drive far to fish it. West Canada Creek Campground sits right on the water at 12275 State Route 28 in Poland, NY — in the catch-and-keep section of the creek. Wake up, grab a coffee, and walk to the water. If you're lucky, dinner takes care of itself.
Most guests practice catch and release, but knowing you're in a section where you can keep your catch — and cook it over a campfire that same evening — makes this stretch of creek something special.
